QUEST 79

Original scripted limited television series

Project Overview

Quest 79 is a scripted limited series following the life of Karen Darke, whose trajectory moves from early ambition through a life-altering accident, paralysis, and elite sporting success. What appears to be a story of achievement fractures into a deeper reckoning, as psychological collapse gives way to a longer search for meaning beyond victory.

Rather than concluding with sporting triumph, the narrative moves into a longer and less visible phase of her life—one defined by exploration, mentorship, and extreme expeditions—culminating in her Antarctic journey to the Pole of Possibility.

Status: In active development

Context & Approach

The project resists a conventional triumph or resilience narrative. Instead, it is structured as a non-linear exploration of identity formation, loss, and renewal over time, focusing on how meaning is constructed through repeated confrontation with uncertainty, rather than singular moments of victory.

The series approaches physical limitation, ambition, and endurance not as fixed conditions but as evolving states shaped by environment, memory, and internal negotiation.

Format

Quest 79 is conceived as a limited television series, with an episodic structure that allows for temporal fragmentation, shifting psychological perspective, and sustained immersion across different phases of the protagonist’s life.

Development Notes

Development is grounded in Karen Darke’s published work—If You Fall… It’s a New Beginning, Quest 79, and Journey to the Pole of Possibility—and informed by direct collaboration with the author, alongside broader research into disability, sport, and extreme expedition culture.
